MECALO Internal Workshop Brings LIST and PDC Together for Two Days of Technical Alignment

On 16–17 October, partners from LIST – Luxembourg Institute of Science & Technology and PDC – Process Design Center met at LIST’s facilities for a two-day technical workshop dedicated to advancing key work streams within MECALO. The meeting offered an important opportunity to align methodologies, review recent deliverables and coordinate upcoming tasks, particularly within Work Package 6.

Day 1: Technical Alignment and Collaborative Planning

The workshop opened on Thursday morning with a session on the silicon production reference scenario. This alignment step ensured that both teams share a consistent understanding of the modelling assumptions and system boundaries.

Later in the morning, PDC presented an overview of the Milestone 3 files. This session helped clarify structure, requirements and next steps associated with the milestone, ensuring that all partners are equipped to continue the work efficiently.

In the afternoon, LIST hosted a visit to its microwave plasma laboratory, offering PDC colleagues a closer look at relevant experimental capabilities. The discussions later shifted toward planning upcoming activities, reviewing data needs and exploring ways to streamline collaboration, including the possibility of joint publications. A dedicated focus was placed on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), particularly the planned publication of the LCA model for the silicon reference scenarios and the added value of model parameterization or linking it with Aspen simulations.

Day 2: Model Review and Data Coordination

Friday began with final technical discussions, including a potential look at the manganese model. The session included dedicated work on the Aspen model, where Gustavo Quillo and David Clousier assessed data needs to support the upcoming LCA developments and ensure alignment between the modelling tools used within the project.

The workshop wrapped up at lunchtime, closing two days of productive exchanges and strengthened coordination between LIST and PDC. This joint effort marks an important step toward consolidating the modelling framework and ensuring coherent progress across MECALO’s technical activities.
