MECALO Presented at the SiFMa Conference 2026 on Sustainable Materials and Chemical Production 

MECALO was featured at the SiFMa Conference, an event dedicated to strengthening Swedish-Norwegian cross-border collaboration among research communities, industry and civil society in the fields of sustainable materials and chemical production. 

During the conference, Dr. Nikolaos Tsakoumis (SINTEF) presented the MECALO concept and the project’s progress towards developing innovative pathways for sustainable carbon production for metallurgical industries.

 A key focus of the presentation was the progress achieved in the development of the MECALO process, which aims to convert captured CO₂ into valuable carbon materials through an innovative two-step approach. The concept has the potential to provide a more sustainable carbon source for metal production while contributing to the reduction of industrial greenhouse gas emissions. 

Key Scientific Results Presented  

Among the results presented, particular attention was given to the catalyst testing activities carried out within the project. Experimental work performed under conditions relevant to silicon and manganese production has delivered encouraging results, demonstrating strong catalyst performance and stability throughout the testing campaign.

The studies presented also showed a good agreement between different testing methodologies, providing further confidence in the robustness of the results obtained so far. These findings represent an important step towards validating the MECALO concept and supporting its future scale-up. 

By sharing these results with researchers, industry representatives and innovation stakeholders attending SiFMa, MECALO contributed to ongoing discussions on how sustainable materials and low-carbon technologies can support the transition towards a more circular and climate-neutral industrial sector. 

As the project progresses, further testing and validation activities will continue to strengthen the technological foundations needed to bring the MECALO concept closer to industrial implementation.
